How to make your own unique custom clay ornaments:
Looking for a fun and simple project to keep your kids entertained on a rainy day. Instead of making the usual holiday cookies with them try something different, like your own unique custom clay ornaments. These are cheep and easy to make, most of what you need is already in your kitchen. My Aunt had told me how to make these clay ornaments a few years ago. So I then decided to make some gingerbread men ornaments for Christmas presents and they turned out really cute. These will make unique inexpensive gifts that your whole family with cherish for years to come.
Well lets jump right to it and get started making these great holiday ornaments. First you will want to preheat the oven at 250’F and then add two cups of flour, one cup of salt, one cup of water and mix together in a medium sized bowl until it thickens. Then sprinkle flour over dough and began to knead, keep doing this untill the dough is no longer sticky. The next step is just like making cookies. sprinkle flour on a cutting board and began rolling the dough out a 1/2″ thick. I chose a gingerbread cookie cutter but you can use any cookie cutter shape you want. Once you have selected your cookie cutter began cutting out your shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet. Next take a tooth pick and make a whole where you want the ornaments to hang and place into the oven for an hour and a half or until hard. Allow at least a half hour to cool on a cooling rack before you start painting. One trick is to add food coloring to your dough mix for the main color and then paint your details later. After you have painted your ornaments and there dry use two to three inch length ribbon to tie through the whole you made in your ornaments.
This was such a fun craft and it’s perfect to do with your kids at any age and a great way for them to make presents for family, friends, or teachers. The best part was that you can customize your ornaments to exactly how you like them. Don’t limit yourself to just the shapes cookie cutters come in, you can make your own patterns this makes your ornaments truly unique. One time I created a hummer pattern so I could make a hummer ornament for my husband I just took a knife and free handed the shape out of the dough, it turned out great and he loved it. The options are endless and it’s alot of fun to discover what you can create.
