I think occasionally it is simple to tumble in to the pitfall of either treating kids like grown ups or treating them as a singular unit. Kids are neither these two alternatives and that’s one of the things I appreciate best about them! They might have really small attention spans in comparison to grown ups however they also simply take in education like a sponge, with out a number of the preconceptions and anxieties that can cause grownups to falter in their learning. That is why ESL children are a real joy to instruct and can make your job as a teacher so completely rewarding. It’s crazy if you consider that if students are inspired and interested they could retain around 80 percent of a language lesson – this puts them leagues ahead of most adults!
Here are a couple of suggestions to ensure that you’re providing kids the most fascinating learning experience possible and achieving as much reward from your time with them as is possible:
1.The very first tip is to show patience! This can sound like a silly one who’d teach kids should they didn’t have patience? But from time to time the best motives are tested when kids get restless whilst in your class. ESL classes, like all early education classes must be set up to allow for children having a number of breaks and lots of activities. Children have brief attention spans however, by planning with this in mind, it is possible to avoid feeling frustrated.
2. Keep levels of energy up! For this reason lecture style English teaching materials have quite a low success rate. When faced with an hour or so of echoing key phrases, children just lose almost all their vitality. This really is a real shame as there is nothing more entertaining than a gang of inspired, enthusiastic kids. This is the reason English language games and other activity targeted lessons are a better alternative for instructing children languages. I believe they’re very likely a better way of teaching different languages to grownups too!
3. Adjust your activities to allow for as many different learning styles as you can. Kids are just like us in that they all learn in multiple ways and respond better to diverse styles of teaching. For instance, many young children react well to singing or dancing. Whereas others just generally want to read. Others enjoy craft time or perhaps resolving challenges in some manner. Whenever you recognize distinct studying styles it’s fairly easy to adapt your class strategy and activities to add as many as possible.
4. Total physical response! This is the technical term for just keeping children moving around! That is why English language games instead of more immobile activities are increasingly being acknowledged as the best way to teach ESL children in classes. When you get a child moving, whether it’s jumping, skipping, or running they will have far more fun and be far more interested in learning. In my experience, physical games always have the magic ingredient for almost any lesson – laughter!
5. Attempt to ensure what you are teaching is within the context of the kid’s everyday life. If you are living in a country that has a beach life-style, build your game about going swimming and sea life. If perhaps the county is centered on ranches and livestock commerce, integrate cattle and horses in your game. As a result you’re making it possible for children to connect some thing new with some thing they know, which can make every thing a lot more understandable for them.
And so when you plan your ESL beginners class remember the magic ingredients – patience, energy, movement and cultural context! English language games can help with the engagement levels but you’ll have to bring the patience!
